Chapter 7

Em opened her eyes. The pain from the morning was gone, but she still felt as if something was wrong. She hoisted herself from Salt’s chest, using her finger to pry open his eyelid. He was out cold. She did the same to Rory and got the same result. A vampire always reacted to having their eyes messed with during sleep. It was the same as an alarm clock for a human. She went to the door, hesitating because of what Rory had said the night before. She could feel that the sun was still high in the sky. It didn’t matter in her heart. Joel needed her, and she knew that as surely as she was standing awake. She slowly pushed the door open, and flashed into the hall, slamming the door before racing to Joel’s room and heading inside. Joel was sitting on his bed, his head down on his bent knees. She walked over slowly and sat down beside him. Her hand went to his back and Joel reached up, taking it and drawing it to his chest. He kissed her fingers.

“Maryann is dead.”

“What?”

“She is dead. I know it this time. There is no question in my mind. I ache from head to toe, as I haven’t ached since I was turned. Someone killed her just before the sun came up.”

“What about Gaelic?”

“He still lives.”

She had also felt Maryann’s death, but it had been a short-lived spike of grief. Her only real connection with the woman was through Joel and it had been diluted. Em had no idea what to say to him. He leaned into her and Em rested her head upon his. “I’m sorry.”

“For what? You didn’t do anything.”

“To hear she is dead.”

“Don’t be. My reaction is purely a blood thing. I have been reminding myself for most of the morning how horrible she was. Whoever killed her probably did vampire kind a service. She was a horrible example of our race. She was cruel and selfish. I just hope that Gaelic didn’t kill her.”

“If he did, it was probably self defense.”

“It wouldn’t matter. She was a part of the governors’ clan, and it would be an unforgivable act to take her life. I was actually surprised that Vidar let you go. I asked him why, and he said that he liked you. He said that you had great potential.” He stroked her cheek, giving her a thin smile. “I have to agree with him. I want to be a part of your life. I was looking at the images on my bedposts. I realized that when I was younger, when I first purchased the bed, it was intriguing. I wanted to try some of the acts it depicted, but I never did. Over the years I lost interest. The more I consider it, the more my interest is renewed. Do you think that Rory and Salt would be willing to teach me?”

Em smiled and nodded. “I think they would be thrilled to show off what they know.
